The Stuarts
klg19: Happy birthday to 17th-century diarist Samuel Pepys (23 February 1633–26 May 1703), whose decade-long journal describes the people and players of his day, as well as monumental events such as the Great Plague and Great Fire of London (the latter, above, in an entry from September 1666). Pepys wrote in an obscure shorthand (not deciphered until the 19th century), but later made fair copies, which he had bound in six volumes: The man in his diary-keeping youth, in a 1666 portrait by John Hayls: and his distinguished middle age (in an engraving from a 1689 portrait by Geoffrey Kneller, used for the 1825 2nd edition of the diary): “And so to bed.”
