Pepys was born in London on 23 February 1633. He was a senior naval administrator and had a wide range of interests. He died on 26 May 1703. His famous diary, kept between 1660 and 1669, gives unique insights into contemporary London. This image shows Samuel Pepys ‘account of the Navy’. This copy is covered in red silk with gold crown and is said to have belonged to William IV. There is also a turned wood pounce pot (sander) dated 1666-1700 , a tin-glazed earthenware square inkwell with floral decoration in blue possible made in England or in the Netherlands, dated 1667-1700
